Black layer is an ever increasing problem in sports and amenity turf. Its name comes from the distinctive layer formed in the top 10cm of the soil profile. It is caused by anaerobic bacteria which colonize the root zone and produce hydrogen sulphide gas which is toxic to roots. This gas then reacts with inorganic iron to produce iron sulphide crytals. This syndrome is caused by lack of oxygen due to poor water movement, poor construction materials and the use of inorganic iron or sulphur based materials. Surface conditions such as shade, lack of air movement and copaction all contributee. Leads to a prolonged wet turf surface, algae forms impeding drainage through the root zone.
Amega Black Layer treatment has four way mode of action that treats black layer:
1. Enzymatic stystem that degrades the protective film covering the anaerobic bacteria
2. Contains ‘activated carbon’ which is highly effective in adsorbing hydrogen sulphide present in the toil
